Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. He not only defined Pop Art, but has continued unrivalled influence on artists and image-making.
Throughout the 1950's Warhol worked as a commercial illustrator in New York. As he became more established in NYC he received numerous awards and accolades for his illustrations, quickly making a name for himself by working for various fashion magazines and retailers.
"Off to Town" is an original, unique drawing/watercolor featuring a hand-written poem alongside a stylized female figure. The distinct handwriting of the poem is based on the handwriting of Warhol's mother Julia; who often inspired or collaborated on elements of text in his early work.
This rhyming poem consists of a light-hearted conversation between a door and it's hinges, while the figure depicts a female wearing a large, crown-like headpiece with a short dress mirroring a similar shape as the crown. Humour, magic and glamour are essential elements of Warhol's portfolio, as is the depiction of women.
This is one of the earliest examples of Warhol Caviar20 has handled. As the Warhol market continues to gallop to a stratosphere beyond, there are fewer and fewer examples of unique, original works in circulation.
