Omega introduced its “Constellation” line in the early 1950’s starting with the reference 2648. The Constellation was Omega’s top-of-the-line model, offering chronometre certified bumper automatic movements and a medallion on the caseback depicting an observatory with 8 stars - each of which represent the 8 records omega set Geneva observatory trials.
Constellations featured a variety of case and dial designs over the years. Early references in the Constellation lineage featured cases with lyre style lugs. .Later, Omega commissioned the famous Gerald Genta to redesign their iconic Constellation model where we saw the "dogleg" constellation introduced.
This reference, a 167.005 was purchased in Zaragoza Air Base in Spain in 1967. I have had discussions on and off with numerous individuals over recent months regarding military watches or watches purchased by military individuals. Most accounts I have gathered are from the offspring of our belated service members. One theme appears to be that military exchanges were a great place to snag a nice watch. Especially for officers but really anyone on active duty. The reason being is they had cash coming in and nowhere really to spend it. Also the watches were often offered below MSRP. Zaragoza Air Base construction began in 1954 and served as a military base for NATO until 1992. Presently it functions as an Airport.

CASE: The previously polished 35mm gold capped over steel case is in fair shape. The case has seen its fair share of polishing over the years and, as a result, the lugs have become more rounded. The case presents with light wear throughout commensurate with age. The crown has been replaced sometime in the past and is omega signed however incorrect for this reference.
DIAL: The original pie pan dial is in fair shape. The dial presents with even spotting and staining throughout presumably from water entering the case sometime in the past. The dial sports black painted baton style hour markers and matching dauphine hands.
MOVEMENT: Omega automatic caliber 551 chronometer certified. Automatic self winding. 24 jewels, 19800 frequency, 50hr power reserve. Service history is unknown. The watch winds, sets and runs and is keeping relatively good time. The movement was certified as a chronometer with "especially good results" according to the original paperwork.
BRACELET: Comes on a brand new Hadley Roma strap.
